The Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art, though it is still being built on the right bank of Jinji Lake in SIP, has become one of the most anticipated cultural landmarks in Suzhou because of two “warm-up programs” it launched in 2024.

One of the programs is “The Productivity of Space” series of projects, which are aimed at “bringing contemporary art creation concepts and methods to every corner in the city of Suzhou”. It started with the “Song Dong: Eating the City” exhibition which boasted a “city” built by Chinese artist Song Dong and 20 volunteers with biscuits of varied shapes and colors, followed by other projects including one featuring a transparent cabin full of “plants” made from waste such as used paper boxes and packing materials and one showcasing the crocheted versions of 17 world-famous art works and documents related to Suzhou.

It is worth mentioning that over 40 free public art education events have been held under the program so far.

Under the other program, themed “Right Bank Lectures”, eight events including   lectures, salon sessions and academic seminars have been held for experts and scholars to exchange opinions on various topics such as those about exhibition planning, architectural design, intellectual property, and art gallery management.

It is learned that the museum is expected to be formally opened in 2026.
