An exhibition sponsored by Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art kicked off at SIP Northern Citizen Center on Sept 26, showcasing the crocheted versions of 17 world-famous art works and documents related to Suzhou as well as videos of the creation process.
It is worth mentioning that 15 female retirees in SIP spent two months crocheting the exhibits. They attended a class at the Weiting Sub-district University for the Aged where they not only learned crocheting skills but also acquired knowledge on the art works.
Hu Yinping, a Chinese artist, initiated the program in 2015 to popularize knitting and crocheting skills among retirees and showcase the works of the learners. The program offers the participants opportunities to discover their hands-on talents and gain pleasure and contentment in the process of learning and art creation.
The exhibition is the fifth of the “Space Productivity” series of projects that Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art launched in April for the purpose of “bringing contemporary art creation concepts and methods to every corner in the city of Suzhou”. The museum has designed a kind of movable “exhibit box” so that the exhibits could be taken to nursing homes, community service centers, schools and other social organizations for people there to enjoy them easily.
